Albufera Energy Storage investigates to develop the rechargeable batteries of the future

For the detractors of electric vehicles, the current autonomy will always be one of the points on which they are based so as not to see the feasibility of implementing this technology. However, thanks to research and evolution of recharging technology, it can be observed how electric vehicles gradually increase the kilometers to travel.

Spain is no stranger to research on recharging batteries. Special mention to the Albufera Energy Storage company, who are specialists in the development of solutions for energy storage. Likewise, they carry out arduous research on new electrochemical batteries.

A few months ago, we published a post in which the development of aluminum-air batteries was cited. There are many advantages, but as we mentioned well, there were still several barriers to overcome. It is precisely these barriers that Albufera Energy Storage is working on. Its objective is to find the right materials that, combined with aluminum-air, allow us to make way for a new generation of batteries. If this is achieved, the first surprising data is the potential that aluminum-air batteries would have, this being 8 times greater if we compare it with current lithium ion batteries.

According to Joaquín Chacón, General Director of Albufera Energy Storage, “Aluminum-air technology is the one that presents the electrochemical pair with the greatest chances of success within the family of metal-air batteries. They have a much higher energy density than Li-ion batteries that, today, are the benchmark in the sector, but with a significantly lower weight. In addition, Aluminum is one of the most common elements of the earth's crust, it is abundant, cheap and safe "

If aluminum-air batteries were to be marketed, the market for electric vehicles would possibly take a giant step. Do not forget that a large percentage of the cost of electric vehicles is due to their batteries. On the other hand, it seems that the future of energy efficiency tends towards Smart Grids, networks where users will be generators of electricity as well as consumers. In this efficient future, a storage technology will be necessary that allows efficient, safe and sustainable control of all energy.
